Visit date : 2023/10/13 Dinner

When it comes to Unagi Don, if you ask ten people in Taipei, maybe eight of them will tell you about “Fei Chien Wu” However, I had only heard of it by name until this time.

This time, thanks to a strong recommendation from a friend, I finally had the chance to try it out for myself.

Dining experience

Environment

The overall style is somewhat Japanese, but due to its long-standing operation, the entire building has a bit of an old feel to it.

These photos were actually taken after we finished eating. When we arrived around 7 or 8 in the evening, there was still a line of people waiting outside.

Menu

Dishes

❤️❤️💔 Eel rice (big) $480

It was very simple, just Unagi and rice. It was a straight-up showdown… but I felt it was somewhat lacking.

The sensation of bones was just too noticeable. People with sensitive palates might find it a bit uncomfortable. I could eat the fine bones and soft bones without a problem, but it left me feeling like, ‘Is that it?’

Additionally, the grilled sauce seemed milder compared to the rich sauce I’ve had with Unagi rice before.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Eel-egg roll $130

Don’t judge it by its unassuming appearance. When it’s taken a bite, the warm egg roll combined with Unagi is simply a perfect match! It’s a dish that makes you want to order more!

⭐⭐⭐Tempura $200 (front) / ⭐⭐⭐⭐Fried oyster $120(behind)

The tempura was pretty standard, with a decent portion of fried vegetables and two pieces of shrimp. However, the taste was just average. It’s a dish you can order, but it’s not something you’d want to reorder.

The fried oysters in the back were delicious! Unfortunately, there’s no separate photo for them.

⭐⭐⭐Barbecue one skewer for $20

The pictures didn’t quite capture it, haha!

On the menu, it says 2 skewers for $40, but you can actually order a single skewer on the spot.

$20 gets you one skewer of pork, and it tastes pretty good! I can vouch for that.”

Conclusion

Seriously, I was a bit disappointed. Maybe it had been too long since I’d had eel rice, and my expectations were sky-high. I didn’t expect to feel a bit let down while eating because of the pronounced bone sensation, making it hard to enjoy with big bites.

If I had to rate just the eel rice, it would probably get around 3.4 out of 5. However, the eel egg roll really elevated this place!

Additionally, the service on that day was quite good (which is essential). With the affordable prices, it gives the restaurant a solid value, so in the end, I’d probably rate it around 4.2 or so!
